Pump Track but it’s clean and Sprayway are there March 26, 2026 Cleaning up Hillsborough Pump Track with Trash Free Trails. We joined Sarah-Jane (SJ) from Trash Free Trails (TFT) to clean up Hillsborough Pump Track on the Saturday of SHAFF Film Festival. So, what is a pump track? It’s a short track with jumps and berms, the great thing about pump tracks is that they are small so they can be added easily to nearly any park in a city. The track then becomes a community hub for kids, teenagers and marketing executives trying to be cool. As Tom attempted to make his way around the pump track on a bike that looked comically small, SJ rallied the troops, the local teenagers of Hillsborough. They seemed interested, and with the potential of winning a jacket, we soon had a small army of kids cleaning up the pump track. A couple of the kids really got behind the cause, led by SJ, they soon had collected well over 250 pieces of single-use plastic. That is a nearly half the amount found at the same clean last year. The main items were: Tear-offs (the rippy bit on a sweet rapper) Bike Parts Sweet Bags Plastic Bottle The main reason for people leaving single-use pollution around on the track is disconnection. They don’t feel like they need to keep the area that they enjoy clean. Trail Cleans like these set an example and hopefully make kids and parents think twice about leaving rubbish around in the future. The biggest legends of the day were Eric and Rowan, who both got involved and picked up the most trash. Rowan even won a new Sprayway jacket for himself. When asked if he would do trail clean again, he answered – “yeah… if I get another jacket!” At TFT they have a saying, “Even if you have affected one person to care about their trails, it is a successful clean.” – SJ
