Since 1974

Founded in 1974 by two outdoor enthusiasts in Manchester, England the brand quickly became one of Britain’s leading outdoor clothing companies. Sprayway has been keeping the British public warm, dry and comfortable in all conditions ever since.

From humble beginnings out of a garage in Chorlton, Manchester; to kitting out arctic explorers and National Park rangers. Sprayway has been keeping the British public warm, dry and comfortable since 1974.

John Hunt and Simon Wright (pictured above) initially began making sailing clothing as a natural extension of their passion for competitive dinghy sailing. They were also keen mountaineers and recognised a lack of solid, durable and waterproof climbing clothing at the time. Driven on by the famous Manchester climate surrounding them, the two began manufacturing coated waterproof jackets.

By 1982 the brand had launched its first GORE-TEX® jacket, the Snipe and in 1983 became the first company to machine tape non-GORE-TEX® waterproof clothing, named the Hydro-dry range. Hydro-dry remains an integral technology to this day.

The Torridon jacket was launched in 1987 to industry-wide acclaim and further expansion in 1989 saw the introduction of fabrics such as Polartec® fleece and many new GORE-TEX® fabrics.

In 1992 SPRAYWAY® introduced R59 the ultra lightweight ripstop GORE-TEX® and a year later sponsored British Mountaineer Alison Hargreaves to raise the technical awareness of the brand.

In May 1995 Alison became the first woman to reach the summit of Everest without the use of bottled oxygen and Sherpas. Tragically in August of that year Alison summits K2 alone, but savage winds on the descent took the lives of Alison and a party of six others.

The range continued to expand with new products in every category and the launch of the GORE-TEX® XCR range. and in 2001 another sponsored athlete; Kieron Mackenzie summits Everest by the North Ridge while testing the new Summit garments.

British female climber Lucy Creamer joined the team in 2003 as the lead sponsored athlete and in Winter 2003 the Mountain Peak range is launched. This range featured sew free and laser cutting technology which made this the most technically advanced range of garments that SPRAYWAY® had produced.

2005 saw a change of ownership and as the company developed so the range did also launching a Lifewear range of trek and travel garments as well as developing a lightweight Mountain Sports range; both complemented the existing classic mountaineering products.

Now in its 40th year, the SPRAYWAY® brand continues to use innovative fabrics across a wide range of products and continues to produce garments which utilise cutting edge technology whilst remaining true to our Mancunian roots.
