29Oct 09 Best In Test!

Sprayway's Kinetic Jacket takes top honours in Country Walking's Waterproof Jacket Test (November Issue) scoring 18/20.

Sprayway Kinetic

Surprisingly light for a jacket cut from a two-layer fabric, but it sacrifices nothing in toughness or comfort. The rollaway hood works a treat, with three-way adjustment and a wired peak; and the pockets are excellent. The large chest pocket easily takes a map and the handwarmers are well-positioned for access with a pack on. The cuffs adjust with Velcro and the hem tensions with drawcords. It breathes well and felt comfortable throughout the test; and more importantly, it also kept some nasty weather out. If it has to be faulted, it would be the flimsy plastic poppers on the main opening, but this is a pretty minor thing. Overall, good looking and seriously good value at £160.

Comfort & Fit: 9/10

Performance: 9/10

Overall: 18/20

"A wired peak hood makes it easy to find a good balance between visibility and protection from bad weather"

"Incredibly light for a two layer fabric with a mesh lining"

Women’s version: Dynamic

Perfect Partner: Kids Cougar I.A.

Sprayway have just returned from sponsoring the Free Ullswater Outdoor Festival in Glenridding, Cumbria. The festival was a resounding success for the area, providing over 50 walks of varying degrees of difficulty led by the Lake District National Park Volunteer Rangers, as well as other free activities such as Mountain Biking, Kayaking, Canoeing and Gorge Scrambling throughout the 9 days.

With people from across the globe getting to Ullswater for the week and being given the chance to trial Sprayway Gear for free, the atmosphere was fantastic and many thanks have to go to the Ullswater Committee our partners in organising the event.

10Oct 09 Trail - All Day Rainpant

When it's raining you need waterproof overtrousers as well, right? Wrong! Why not just wear normal trousers that are waterproof instead? It saves you the cash, discomfort and weight of buying, wearing and carrying both trousers and overtrousers.

Sprayway All Day Rainpant (6 month test)

Only 430g (mens size L) and you don't need additional legwear. The breathable stretch Hydrodry fabric with a hydrostatic head of 5000mm has taped seams. There is a zip fly and elasticated waist, plus two pockets. I've been wearing them most days on my valley trips.

Clammier than non-waterproof trousers, but not as clammy as expected. I have often left them on all day and remained reasonably comfortable, even indoors. I don't expect them to remain waterproof as long as dedicated overtrousers with higher levels of hydrostatic head or durability, but so far they are still waterproof.

Verdict

For valley and shorter day walks, these waterproof trousers are all I wear now. They are ideal for working and standing around indoors too. However they do rustle more than a regular pair, and for longer walks and more comfort in the mixed, unpredictable weather of the mountains, there is still a place for a good walking trouser plus a dedicated overtrouser

Sprayway Ridge 40+5

Perfomance 4.5/5

Value 5/5

The Ridge is a great value pack that's stacked with features and seems way bigger than the 40+5 litres it claims to be - you'd have no problem using this for most backpacking trips, let alone winter days in the hills. It's ideal for the driving rain that plagues British hills with its removeable waterproof liner and rain cover, and there are so many features that there's only room to list the best, which includes a semi-adjustable harness system, ice axe loops, huge external storage panel, hip belt pockets, rop strap, hydratin system compatibility and bottle pockets. All this kit means the ridge is relatively heavy at 2300g - but you get a lot of pack for your money.
