24Mar 13 FWF - Fair Wear Foundation

Outdoor and Sports Company Ltd (OSC) has become the first UK outdoor sports supplier to become a member of Fair Wear Foundation. OSC’s outdoor brands Mountain Equipment and Sprayway along with it’s running brands Ronhill and Hilly are all signed up to the initiative.

Fair Wear Foundation (FWF) exists to promote fair labour conditions in the garment industry worldwide. As an affiliate member, OSC commits to implement the stringent FWF Code of Labour Practices in both it’s own business operations and the supply chain of all of its brands.

“We joined Fair Wear Foundation after undertaking a significant programme of preliminary work. Our affiliation with this independent organisation reflects how seriously we take our social responsibility towards all people connected to the OSC business.” commented Mike Deegan, the CEO of Outdoor and sports Company Ltd.

The FWF Code of Labour Practices contains eight elements, which are based on United Nations and International Labour Organization principles:

  • Employment is freely chosen
  • There is no discrimination in employment
  • No exploitation of child labour
  • Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining
  • Payment of a living wage
  • No excessive working hours
  • Safe and healthy working conditions
  • Legally-binding employment relationship

FWF regularly verifies the implementation of these labour practices through factory audits and worker interviews both onsite and offsite, and through annual ‘Brand Performance Checks’ which assess how well each member’s management policies support the Code of Labour Practices. FWF publicly reports on the progress of member companies towards implementation of the Code elements.

"Fair Wear Foundation is pleased to welcome Outdoor and Sports Company as our newest member company. Over the past several months, OSC has been working hard to fulfil all the prerequisites for becoming a member. We look forward to working with the OSC brands and supporting them in their ongoing efforts to improve workplace conditions" said Erica van Doorn, director of Fair Wear Foundation

3Dec 12 The making of... Sprayway AW13 Location Shoot

As i am sure you will be aware; Team Sprayway are no strangers to the Great Outdoors. When the opportunity comes around to disappear into the hills and mountains for 3 days there is often a formal queue formed at the office door.

This time however with a hectic development period approaching it fell to our newest recruit and Marketing Manager; Thomas to take the baton.

A self confessed virgin on the (higher) hills; Thomas set off for Haweswater one quiet October morning...what followed was a total submersion into the Sprayway...er way.

Utilising our favourite photographer; Tommy Martin and two brand new faces in the form of our delightful models Nicky and Neil; Thomas had the strenuous task of lumping samples up and down all manner of steep routes, hills and trails.

We think you will all agree what came out was worth the effort though.

Keep an eye out across our social media platforms and in store for AW13 marketing displays.

16Nov 12 Grey Sky thinking...

The start of November (01.1.12) saw the first “Grey sky thinking” company retreat take place at the Anderton centre, Chorley

It proved to be a fabulous day with differing kinds of weather; but a perfect opportunity to test out the range.

The Anderton Centre is situated on the shores of the beautiful Rivington Reservoir in the West Pennine Moors in Lancashire, close to Chorley, Bolton, Manchester and Preston. The centre boasts superb facilities and an idyllic rural setting which is conveniently located close to the M6 and M61 corridor.

The aim of the day was to discuss product direction and plans for our 40th anniversary fast approaching in 2014. Keep an eye out for the start of our exciting plans in the coming months.

However; the real story was long standing team member and Head of Design; Anne Carter creating a new kind of walking…

After seeking the advice of a local farmer and taking what can only be described as a shortcut through a swamp; Anne became embroiled in a battle with the elements. Woman against mud.

The results of which can be seen on the below link.

A fun day was had by all and most importantly gave the teams the chance to test and showcase our product range in high winds and rainy climates.

Big thanks to all the staff at http://www.andertoncentre.co.uk/

16Sep 12 Company retreat 2012

Friday (14.09.12) saw our annual OSC company retreat take place at Windy Harbour Farm in Glossop.

The OSC group which owns the Sprayway, Mountain Equipment, Ronhill and Hilly brands asked the moorland adventure group to again organise and instruct our annual away day.

It proved to be a competitive day of outdoor activities for all with a closely fought battle between teams made up of office and warehouse staff.

On a round robin basis, the teams set about an itinerary which included archery, giant jenga, a cycling obstacle course, assault course, fire making and scaling a 20ft climbing wall.

Some stand out performances from Sprayway staff saw Northern Sales Rep, Mike Booth complete the cycling task in a record time with no penalties.

However; drama ensued in the final challenge of the day. With each team having been tasked with the assignment of safely launching 4 raw eggs from the top of the 20ft high climbing wall using ONLY the contents of a bag of tools, one team whom will remain nameless took it upon themselves to construct a safety box made from rogue beer mats. With said box wrapped in a bin bag, the bag sailed high into the Derbyshire air and landed far away in bushes. The watching crowd all proclaimed at how well they had done. However a certain helpful Sprayway Marketing Manager volunteered himself to fetch the bag and upon finding the rogue contents, put his size 11 walking boot right through the 4 eggs to the amazement of the on looking crowd. Despite some protest from the cheating team, they were eventually disqualified and normal order was restored.

A fun day was had by all and most importantly gave the teams the chance to test and showcase our product range in high winds and rainy climates.

Bring on next year team Green!

30Mar 12 Dash Hoody - 5 Stars

The good folk over at Gear We Are have just finished a review of the Dash Hoody and posted the results on line. To say we're chuffed is an understatement!

The fabric and alternative fleece fabric were bigs hits in the review and it gained the following summary:

SUMMARY: Sprayway’s Dash Hoody is feminine, warm and stylish and doesn’t look as cheap as a bog-standard ‘Fleece’. Its pockets are cosy and it’s a joy to wear when walking and generally as casual wear. It’s a little pricey, but feels like a quality product.

5/5

27Mar 12 Trail Magazine Review Compass Shorts

Trail Magazine have been testing a number of walking shorts lately and the Sprayway Compass Short got a look in for Best in Test, just losing out to some much, much more expensive shorts.

The full review reads a bit like:

"The fabric used in the Sprayway Compass / Escape shorts is two-way stretch so they are great if you struggle with getting a good fit. There is also stretch in the waist so again these can expand around  a tubby tum or hug a neater waistline.

There is no belt provided but you get belt loops in case you want to add one. I also liked the brushed lining inside the waist that make these a little more comfy compared to most shorts here.

The lower right leg pocket will take a small guidebook and at a squeeze you can get an OS map in the zipped hip pockets too. There’s a simple Velcro closure pocket at the rear. These are great shorts due to that stretch fabric and its general comfort, and at this price they are a real bargain.

But the pockets of the Sprayway Compass / Escape could be a little better as those two hip pockets are a notch small if you want to stash an OS-sized map. They also provide more of a hugging style of fit, rather than a baggy, airy fit, which you may or may not prefer in hotter weather. There is no additional crotch panel either, so again they feel a little closer than some. So not my favourite but still pretty good."

At £35 a snap, up against pairs over £65 we feel they're an absolute winner!

A new addition worth also checking out are our Kinesis Multi Activity shorts...perfect for any day on the trail or hill.
